A Generation Learning to Serve
This year at Star Gospel Mission, one of the clearest signs of hope wasn’t just in numbers served, but in who was serving.
Our Volunteer of the Year is a young student navigating school, future decisions, and the uncertainty that comes with becoming who you’re called to be. Like many, he didn’t arrive with all the answers—just a willingness to show up. Over time, his steady presence became a reflection of something deeper taking root at the Mission: a generation learning that service is not about having it all figured out, but about faithfulness where you are.
Through his time volunteering, he discovered that community is built through consistency, humility, and shared humanity. He served alongside staff, long-time volunteers, families, and other young people—all meeting Guests not with assumptions, but with dignity and respect. In the process, his understanding of calling expanded beyond personal ambition to include responsibility, compassion, and action.
“Volunteering has really changed me in a way where I want to pursue community service—helping people not only in the U.S., but around the world.”
– Daniyal Eldridge, SGM Volunteer of the Year
His story is not an outlier. This year, we saw a noticeable rise in families volunteering together, children serving with their parents, and young people stepping into meaningful roles. These moments mattered—not just for those we serve, but for the homes and hearts being shaped through service.
As our Volunteer Manager shared, inviting young people into real work builds confidence, empathy, and a sense of belonging. It reminds them—and us—that everyone has something valuable to offer.
As we look ahead, we’re grateful for volunteers like him, and for the families and youth who continue to answer the quiet call to serve. Together, they are helping build a future rooted in compassion, faith, and shared responsibility.
