More Than a Meal: How Brotherhood and Service Unite Through Burgers, Boxers & Briefs

Each Fourth of July, the aroma of burgers on the grill welcomes Guests and neighbors to Star Gospel Mission as brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.'s Charleston Sigma Chapter gather for one of the Mission's most meaningful annual traditions: Burgers, Boxers & Briefs.

What began in 2023 through the leadership of Star Gospel Mission Executive Director and Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Marion Platt, and members of the Sigma Chapter has become more than a community cookout. It is a living expression of Phi Beta Sigma's motto, "Culture for Service, Service for Humanity."

"Our fraternity's motto mirrors the legacy that Star Gospel Mission founder Obadiah Dugan left behind," said Archie S. Temoney, Jr., M.S.Ed., M.Ed. "Having a brother like Rev. Dr. Platt is a credit to our chapter because his leadership is so impactful in the area of social action."

Each year, fraternity members provide Guests with a hot meal while collecting new underwear, socks, and other essentials. While these items meet practical needs, Archie says they also communicate something deeper.

"Dignity should be extended to all of God's children, even when faced with tough life situations," he shared. "We all could be one situation away from being in someone else's shoes."

For the Charleston Sigmas, the event is also an opportunity to build relationships. Through conversations, shared meals, and time spent serving alongside Guests, the chapter has learned the value of consistency and collective action.

"Many hands make light work," Archie said. "When we all get on one accord, amazing things happen and lives are touched in positive ways."

One of this year's most meaningful moments came through the participation of the chapter's Sigma Beta Club, a mentoring program for young men ages 8 to 18.

"Seeing our Sigma Betas serve has motivated me to be a better example for their growth," Archie reflected. "Every year we make new memories, have robust conversations, and make positive connections with the community and those who serve the Mission."

For Archie, service is more than something organizations should promote—it's something they should practice.

"If an organization is built on service and giving back, it should not just 'talk the talk' but also 'walk the walk,'" he said. "Be intentional about giving back to organizations like Star Gospel Mission. If you're looking for a way to make a difference, contacting the Mission is a great place to start."

We are grateful for the Charleston Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and their continued partnership. Through simple acts of service, meaningful relationships, and faithful commitment, Burgers, Boxers & Briefs continues to remind our Guests that they are seen, valued, and never alone.
