Volunteer Spotlight with Lisa Sheilley
Some of the most meaningful work at Star Gospel Mission happens behind the scenes, through the people who quietly give their time and talents to support the Mission. Lisa Sheilley is one of those people, bringing both personal experience and a heart for serving families to her volunteer role.
Lisa and her husband, Kevin, moved to the Charleston area in spring 2025 when Kevin became CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. Before moving to South Carolina, Lisa served on the board of directors for Project Hope, a faith-based transitional housing organization in Ocala, Florida, that supported single mothers and their children experiencing homelessness.
That experience gave Lisa a deeper understanding of the challenges families face and the importance of safe, supportive housing.
“When I discovered last year that SGM offered transitional housing opportunities and was just beginning its housing for women and children, I knew I wanted to learn more and get involved,” Lisa shared.
After connecting with Theresa, Star Gospel Mission’s Donor Relations and Data Manager, Lisa found a way to contribute that suited her strengths: providing administrative support for donor coordination. Her behind-the-scenes work helps support the relationships and generosity that make the Mission’s programs possible.
“Knowing that what I do behind the scenes at SGM makes a difference and has purpose keeps me coming back,” she said.
For Lisa, volunteering is about more than completing tasks. It is an opportunity to be part of something meaningful and to witness the work God is doing through the Mission.
“Being excited to see what God is doing and what He will do next here is exciting to think about!”
Beyond the Mission
Outside of volunteering, Lisa enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, scrapbooking, and hosting friends for casual meals and card games. She and Kevin have three grown children, and one of Lisa’s greatest joys is spending time with her eight-year-old grandson, Remy.
The two enjoy building with Legos, making crafts, cooking together, and playing board games and cards. For Lisa, even the simple greeting, “Hi Granna,” is enough to bring a smile to her face.
Looking Ahead with Hope
Lisa’s journey reflects the many ways people can find a place to serve at Star Gospel Mission. Whether working directly with Mission Guests or supporting the work behind the scenes, every contribution matters.
Her message to others is rooted in the same faith that inspires her service:
“Never stop anticipating the miracles God will do when we ask and believe Him to be the difference maker!”
We are grateful for Lisa and for the many volunteers whose time, compassion, and commitment help make the Mission’s work possible.
