Conversations on a Bench: Save the Date October 8, 2026
Charleston is more than a place.
It is the people who call it home, the stories carried through its streets, the businesses and organizations that serve it, the artists who bring it to life, and the neighbors who make up its communities.
It is also the people whose stories are often overlooked.
A Portrait of Charleston is a portrait of the people who are in it every day.
That is the heart behind this year's Conversations on a Bench, a 24-hour community awareness event hosted by Star Gospel Mission on October 8.
For 24 hours, a simple bench becomes a place to pause, listen, and talk about homelessness in our community.
A Conversation Worth Having
Homelessness is often discussed in terms of numbers and statistics. But behind every number is a person with a story.
Conversations on a Bench creates space for those stories and for the broader community to be part of the conversation.
Throughout the 24 hours, Executive Director, Rev. Dr. Marion Platt will engage with community leaders, local artists and musicians, partner organizations, Mission Guests and staff, and people who simply happen to pass by.
Some conversations will be planned. Others will happen spontaneously.
That is part of the point.
We want to create a space where people can stop, ask questions, listen to perspectives they may not have considered, and learn more about homelessness in Charleston.
More Than an Event
Conversations on a Bench isn't about simply talking about homelessness for 24 hours.
It is about helping our community see it differently.
It is about recognizing that homelessness is not someone else's story. It is part of the story of our city, and the people experiencing it are part of our community.
When we slow down enough to listen, we begin to see more than a circumstance. We see a person. And when we see people, we have an opportunity to respond with greater understanding, compassion, and action.
A Portrait of Charleston
Every city has a story.
Charleston's story is made up of countless individual stories woven together. Some are familiar. Others are rarely heard.
This year's Conversations on a Bench invites us to look at Charleston through a wider lens and recognize the people who are part of its portrait every single day.
