Founder’s Day: Honoring Obadiah Dugan’s Legacy & Star Gospel Mission’s Future

On March 9th, Star Gospel Mission celebrated Founder’s Day — a powerful reminder of how one man's compassion can spark a movement of lasting change. 121 years ago, Obadiah Dugan looked out at the streets of Charleston and saw men in need of hope and salvation. In response, he founded Star Gospel Mission — a ministry built on the love of Jesus Christ and the belief that every person deserves a second chance.

What began as a humble act of obedience has grown into one of Charleston’s oldest and most trusted ministries, serving thousands of men with shelter, food, spiritual care, and a path forward.

On Founders Day, we reflected on our rich legacy and celebrated the lives transformed through this ministry. As we gathered in gratitude for all God has done, we also looked ahead to the future and our Brighter Together campaign — a bold step toward expanding our impact and ensuring that Obadiah Dugan’s legacy continues to shine in Charleston for generations to come.

Continue His Legacy

Obadiah Dugan didn’t wait for someone else to step in — he stepped forward in faith. And because of that bold decision, thousands of lives have been transformed over the past 121 years.

Today, that same spirit of faith lives on through our Brighter Together Campaign — a new vision to expand our facilities and deepen our impact by providing additional transitional housing and vital support services for individuals and families on the road to recovery and restoration.

We believe the future is brighter when we walk alongside those in need. But we can’t do it alone.

Your gift today helps us honor the past by building for the future.
Will you help us continue the work our founder began — and bring lasting hope to people in need in Charleston?
