A Mission Close to My Heart
By Kim Wilms, Star Gospel Mission Volunteer
Before hearing Rev. Dr. Marion Platt speak at Seacoast Church in Mount Pleasant, I honestly did not know about Star Gospel Mission. As he shared about the work happening at the Mission, I was moved by what I heard, especially the commitment to helping mothers and their children.
After my husband and I toured the Mission, I was amazed by what I saw. We learned about the history of Star Gospel Mission, saw where new housing will be available for moms and their children, and heard how the Mission provides church services every Sunday for the Guests staying there. But what stood out to me most was the dignity and compassion shown to every person who walks through those doors.
My connection to this work is personal. I know I am truly blessed, but for a large part of my life, I was only a paycheck away from being in someone else’s shoes. When my children were young and I was divorced, I had to humble myself and seek help from places like The Salvation Army, Focus Hope, and local churches for food and clothing for my children.
I will never forget how I was treated during that season. People were kind, generous, and willing to help. They reminded me that even during difficult times, there are people who care. I see that same heart at Star Gospel Mission.
I believe we all go through hard seasons, and we all need someone to help us get back on our feet. That is what makes the work at Star Gospel Mission so meaningful. It is about more than providing meals or meeting physical needs. It is about reminding people they are valued, cared for, and not alone.
If someone asked me whether they should volunteer, my answer would be simple:
Do it.
It is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Being able to provide a meal for someone and spend time with people in your community is truly special.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside Star Gospel Mission, and I cannot wait to come back again with food, pillowcases for the kids, and a heart ready to help. This work restores my faith in humanity and reminds me how powerful it is when we show up for one another.
