The Unexpected Gift: How Serving at Star Gospel Served Me
A reflection by Mr. Mikell Thaxton, Board of Directors, Star Gospel Mission
As Thanksgiving approaches, I find myself reflecting on the many blessings God has poured into my life—my family, health, home, work, and countless gifts too numerous to name. But this year, my gratitude has a special focus: Star Gospel Mission.
For the past eight years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the board of directors, and I can honestly say something unexpected—
I’m the one who has been served.
Star Gospel’s mission to transform hearts and lives extends far beyond its guests. That transformation reaches volunteers, donors, staff, students, and yes—even board members like me.
Witnessing Transformation Up Close
I’m grateful for the opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible work that Executive Director Rev. Dr. Marion Platt (“Pastor Marion”) and his dedicated team pour into this ministry each day—restoring dignity and hope to men, women, and children as they journey from homelessness toward stability and self-sufficiency.
I’m equally grateful for our courageous Mission guests who choose, day after day, to rebuild their lives through the grace of Christ; for our generous donors and volunteers whose compassion makes this work possible; and for the steady prayers and support of our wider faith community, whose faithfulness strengthens every step of this mission.
A New Understanding of Homelessness
It feels fitting that November is Homelessness Awareness Month, because serving with Star Gospel has completely reshaped my understanding of homelessness and the unfair stigma surrounding it.
Many men and women lose housing through circumstances far outside their control—medical emergencies, job loss, broken relationships, trauma, or a lack of family support. Others have faced addiction or made mistakes that spiraled beyond what they could manage. But does the cause ever change our call to respond with compassion?
Scripture Spotlight
Proverbs 19:17 reminds us, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.” For many years, I looked at someone experiencing homelessness and wondered what they had done to end up in such a difficult place. But over time, Star Gospel Mission has reshaped my thinking and softened my heart.
Now I find myself asking, “What is their story—and how can we help?”
That shift in perspective has been one of the greatest gifts this Mission has given me.
Thank You, Star Gospel Mission
I am profoundly grateful—for the Mission’s work, its people, its heart, and the way it changes all of us who encounter it.
About Me
I’ve served as a Star Gospel Mission board member for eight years, introduced to the Mission through First (Scots) Presbyterian Church and David Hoskinson. I remain grateful for that life-changing experience.
